Science in the News

The aim of this Group is to share recent developments in science

  • Items of Scientific News from newspapers, television, etc.
  • Special Subjects of Interest through Talks or Recorded programmes
  • Outside Trips to Local Industries or Museums.

Science In The News (SITN) is designed to be a topical presentation and discussion group rather than a lecture series. The following list will give you a flavour of the topics we have covered since our inception:-

Future Meetings

Upcoming topics:

July 2nd Dr Emily Jones. Quadram Institute Norwich.

Dr Emily Jones is a research scientist at the Quadram Institute in Norwich, where she studies how microbes interact with our cells using “organ‑on‑chip” technology and advanced microscopy. She has spent more than a decade developing human cell models to understand infections and other diseases of organs including the gut, brain, lungs and female reproductive tract. Emily’s recent work includes building miniature, lab‑grown versions of the gut-brain axis to investigate how toxins and microbes might contribute to conditions such as Parkinson’s disease or SARS-CoV-2. She is also currently developing a new vaginal infection model to tackle common, often recurrent yeast infections in women. She works closely with clinicians and industry to reduce reliance on animal experiments and to improve diagnostics and treatments for human diseases.

As always, we encourage everyone to contribute ideas and topics that interest you. Please share any intriguing scientific news or insights you have encountered, as they can inspire our discussions and lead to exciting new topics. Your participation is the foundation of our group, so please let any of the Steering Group know what you’d like to discuss together.

Finally, we encourage all our group members to look around the web site to better understand the many activities available in Beccles u3a (in particular, see Latest News and Special Interest Groups).

We look forward to seeing you at our next meeting and hope you will join us in exploring these engaging topics and more!
