Petanque

The Pétanque Group meets for relaxed, friendly games on Monday afternoons at Beccles Quay — weather permitting, of course and availability of players.
We currently play on the area at the end of the path beside the café, gathering at 2.00pm every Monday from the first Monday in April until the last Monday in October.
We use a WhatsApp group to check who’s available each week, so please don’t just turn up unannounced! If you’d like to know more or join the WhatsApp group (just click the little bird icon), and contact the convenor.
As the group is going from strength to strength, we plan to keep playing for as long as the weather — and our throwing arms — allow. It’s a fun way to enjoy a touch of French culture in the open air, stay active, and share good company.
Many thanks to the Beccles u3a French groups for generously donating the equipment, and to the Harbourmaster for kindly allowing us to store it in his office.
🥏 Pétanque Etiquette (The Unofficial Guide)
Whether you're a seasoned boules whisperer or still figuring out which end of the piste is up, here are a few gentle reminders to keep our Monday afternoons rolling smoothly:
1. Don’t just turn up. We love spontaneity — just not when it disrupts the game. Check the WhatsApp group first. The little bird icon isn’t just decorative.
2. Dress code: relaxed, but beware of rogue gravel. No need for berets or stripy shirts (unless you insist), but sturdy shoes and a sense of humour are essential.
3. Measuring disputes? Channel your inner diplomat. If two boules are vying for glory, resist the urge to eyeball it from a dramatic angle. Use the tape. Or better yet, let someone else use the tape.
4. No gloating, no sulking. Whether your boule lands like a dream or veers off toward Norfolk, keep it light. We play for fun — and occasional bragging rights.
5. Snacks optional, but sharing earns points. A well-timed biscuit can mend many a missed throw. Just don’t use it as a makeshift marker.
6. Weather permitting means weather permitting. If it’s raining sideways or the Quay’s turned into a duck pond, we’ll see you next week.
