Did you know that playing a musical instrument is a great way to have fun, make new friends and learn ensemble playing skills.

Making music is relaxing, can help promote wellbeing, and is a fantastic way to chill out.

Beccles u3a Folk Band is for members who play, or used to play, a drum, or a woodwind, stringed or strumming instrument.

What we do: We enjoy ourselves, learning and playing folk tunes together. We share our knowledge and skills, and support each other to make music and grow in confidence.

We have spaces for new players, both experienced or inexperienced. We're an easy-going, supportive and friendly group. You would be made very welcome. Just drop me an email and I'll be in touch.

Music stands: we have six music stands available to use in our sessions, or bring your own.

Folk Tunes: We play popular folk session, dance and song tunes. All tunes are written in D or G major and include guitar chords. Some have harmony parts. We use a book called "The Unexpected Polka and other tunes' by Circle Time Press. Free copies available to use, or buy your own.

Instruments: We warmly welcome accordion, concertina, melodeon; cello, double bass, harp, violin/fiddle; banjo, dulcimer, guitar, mandolin; clarinet, flute, penny whistle, oboe, recorder, saxophone.

Experience: We're a mix of beginner, rusty and experienced players. Prior experience playing in a group is not needed. Beginners need a basic understanding of how to play their instrument. It helps if strummers can play a few chords, such as C, G and D major. It's ok to play with or without music.

Group History: we started in October 2025. In January 2026 we joined together with the u3a Scottish Country Dancers to stage a Burns Night celebration. The Folk Band performed the Skye Boat Song and played the music for Pat a Cake Polka. You can read the full story here.
