Family History
| NEXT MEETING Our next meeting will be on Tuesday, 14th July, 2026. The topic is: THE 1921 CENSUS We will be looking at what members have learned from the 1921 Census records, which were released in January 2022. |
| LAST MEETING: WILLS On 9th June we looked Wills, which are often overlooked and underused in family history. The presentations raised a number of fascinating issues including the use of artificial intelligence to transcribe difficult handwriting; the detailed bequests and funeral arrangements of a wealthy spinster; and the differences between valuation at probate and the assets listed in bequests. IMPORTANT INFORMATION: Gresenhall Farm and Workhouse Beccles u3a is organising an outing to Gresenhall Farm and Workhouse Museum on Thursday, 16 July 2026, Further details and a booking form can be found here. Norfolk Record Office Events Norfolk Record Office runs regular free events on aspects of family history. Some of these are on-line whilst others are 'in person' at different venues around Norfolk. Further details can be found here. 1926 Census of Ireland On 18 April 2026, the National Archives of Ireland released the 1926 Census of Ireland, the first census of the Irish Free State. The census is available online at the website of the National Archives of Ireland (NAI), www.nationalarchives.ie where researchers can search for their ancestors, and download digital images of each household return and the accompanying enumerators’ return. Understanding relationship terms Do you struggle to understand terms like 'second cousin twice removed' or wonder what is the difference between a first cousin and a third cousin? Our Cousin Calculation Chart helps to explain these different relationship terms. |
The aim of the group is to:
- Discuss matters of genealogical interest
- Share some of our findings
- Help one another to find out more
Meetings are usually on the second Tuesday of the month 10am - 12 noon. We meet in St Michael's Undercroft, at the rear of the church. There is disabled access to the Undercroft by means of a ramp at the exterior door. WiFi has been installed in the Undercroft.
Our meetings generally consist of one main theme with additional time for news items and query and help sessions.
We also have a WhatsApp group for on-line discussions between meetings. If members would like to join the group please contact the convenors with your mobile number via the bird at the top of this page.
We welcome any type of contribution, but if you would like to use a powerpoint presentation or display an image or document, please email it as an attachment to alec.hillier@gmail.com a few days before the meeting.
Please bring £2 to cover the costs of room hire and refreshments.
